Yes. The bottles are put through a machine that crushes them. The pressure built up causes the lid to fly off and has injured people before. It is not just that they can not be recycled it is that they can be a danger to the people working in the recycle plant.

If you live where you can put the bottles into a shredding machine you need to take off the tops. If you recycle or take them back to the store for a refund you do not need to. The tops can be recycled.
