Here's a list of foods that our wild birds outside prefer to each of their tastes:
Bluejays - LOVE peanuts but will eat dried corn, bread, insects and seeds.
Crows - LOVE my homemade cornbread but will eat peanut butter, peanuts and small animals or eggs.
Wrens - They prefer suet.
Mockingbirds - Bugs are their favorites...whenever you see them lifting their wings up and down in a twitchy fashion, they're trying to scare the insects so they'll run and the bird can see them for easy pickins...
Cardinals and Chickadees love black oil sunflower seeds.
Our Tufted Titmouse loves dried cranberries....but will also eat black oil sunflower seeds.
The Finches love thistle seed.
Most birds will eat insects or small critters like lizards or even smaller birds. Some predatory birds...well, I'm sure you know what they eat. Some birds eat fish...some will steal cat food.
There's thousands of birds and they all have a different preference.

Birds are like mammals in that they eat many different things depending on the species. Just like a tiger would eat a rabbit, so birds of prey, like hawks, falcons and owls will eat smaller birds, but they are not the only birds that do this. Jays, Crows, Grackles, Meadowlarks, Shrikes and several other species of birds will attack and kill smaller birds, consuming them. This is particularly common in nesting season, when birds need extra protein. Some falcons in the United States used to be called names that indicated birds that they ate. The Kestrel was called the Sparrow Hawk, the Merlin was Pigeon Hawk and the Peregrine was Duck Hawk. In England they still have a bird called the Sparrow Hawk, but its a true hawk, not a falcon.

That depends on the bird my friend. Can you be more specific as there is a big difference in diet between a penguin and a finch.
