There are wild racoons that come into our house through the cat door really late at night and they eat all the cat food and rummage through the cupboards. How can we make it so the cats can still go in and out of the house without the racoons coming inside?

First thing, keep your cat indoors until you get rid of the coons. You do NOT want these animals in your home. They can carry lice, rabies, and other nasty things. Is your cat up to date on his/her shots? Put a live trap outside by the cat door and bait it with a can of tuna, cat food, etc. You might have to do this several times cuz there could be a family of them. Wear heavy gloves moving the live trap, coons can really bite! Don't forget to clean out your cupboards and throw away anything they tore open. Good luck!

Believe or not I just read about a device that makes a pet door work only for the pet. There is a transmitter on the collar of the cat (or dog) and the door swings open only when the transmitter comes within close proximity to the door. Ingenious! The other alternative would be to keep your cats inside at night and brace the pet door so no other animals can enter.

you can kill em or that auto door thing...you could trap em too and take them to a land far away with a live trap (box like trap) from you local farm store...coons like shiney things..i used to trap them for their pelts by drilling a 1 to 1&1/2 inch hole in a log about 3 to 4 inches deep....put a piece of foil balled up in it and pound nails around the hole at an angle so the spikes stick out in the hole...the coon can slide an open hand in but, when he grabs the foil and makes a fist, he cant pull it out because of the nails...and will not let go for some reason...
