I would definitely choose AVG. It's very highly rated for a free AV. I've heard nothing good about PC Tools AV. It uses the Kaspersky AV engine, which is good, but it uses an old version, 5. I've also read that it is NOT light on resource usage, meaning it will slow down your PC. AVG runs nice and light.
You also might want to check out Avira's Antivir. Also free, also highly rated.
You can check out many of the top rated AVs (free and paid) here:

Just click on "Comparatives" in the left hand column, and choose the most recent tests.
Good Luck

AVG Antivirus is the best free AV software you can find in the market. Me n some of my friends are using it for quite a while now n we are pretty much satisfied by its performance. If you are making up your mind for chosing one of the two, then i would highly reccomend AVG :-)

I'd vote for (highest - lowest starting from number one): *1. AOL Active Virus Shield for: a. its high detection rate which updates automatically every hour b. its user-friendly interface c. it can scan a lot of viruses...which can detect about 99.62% after a test in www.virus.gr *2. Avast! 4 Home Edition for: a. its real-time protection (also in Active Virus Shield) b. it has an option to delete a virus once found ......, can detect about 87.46. Cons: too many icons and confusing user interface *3. AntiVir PersonalEdition for: a. it can detect malware better than Avast and AVG b. it's cute umbrella icon ......, can detect about 94.26% Cons: a very sluggish update *4. AVG Free Edition for: a. a simple interface ......, can detect about 82.82% Cons: low virus detection

Avg is just great
My experience
I was finding new new files with funny names
Whenever I open excel I was getting a data error message
I tried with Norton but it said my compu is clear
One friend of mine advised avg . To my shocking surprise it sorted out many viruses - in 100s , styling it as Trojans and all
I affected many word and excel files but now I got the problems resolved
THANKS TO AVG

I highly reccomend AVG. I have it right now and it doesn't use a lot of resources meaning that it doesn't slow down your computer. Also it has real time monitoring and an easy to use interface, although it's not appealing.
