Well in PE tomorrow I think we will be running our mile. I usually get those cramps in my side like under my ribs. I need to know whether those will be worse if you eat more, or if you don't eat. I just want to get a decent time and not be slowed down by those annoying cramps. Thanks.

But does eating more make it worse, or does not eating cause them?

just relax and stretch alot before you run. if you get cramps and they're really painful, thll your coach/teacher they'll probalt let you sit out. also, aviod eating too much junk food, it isn't pretty. me and my friends once at lots of junk food before a track meet...let's just say we were in the bathroom most the meet.
Good Luck!

they`ll be worse if you eat more, with too much food in your stomach and intestines blood normally is rerouted there to hasten and aid digestion, ( which is why we feel sleepy after a large meal ), however when we do something strenous, ( exercise ) blood is rerouted away from the alimentary tract ( stomach and intestine ) to the more important body parts like the brain, heart , lungs, as a result because the food stays in your stomach and is not digested, your intestines still attempt to push this undigested food down ( hence the cramp ), if the food cant be digested vomiting has even been known to happen, the upside though is that vomiting often resolves the cramps...however be sure to eat something at least 2 or 3 hours before exercising or you might get hypoglycemic ( run out of gas ), im a doctor and im trying to explain all this in non-medical terms, hope i was able to be of some help, and oh, dont forget to stretch and warm-up ! thanks !

Dear mmhmm_19,
A simple advice since it was experienced by me about a month ago to get (sticth) pain underneath those ribs. Then, a friend from the army gave some tips before I went for my first time marathon in 30 years.

chck out my blog on the marathon day in Singapore:

Tips one : Drink moderate sufficient (one can) of ISOTONIC DRINK before and (or more) after you go for long jogs or running session. ISOTONIC DRINK contains certain minerals especially SODIUM CITRATE & SODIUM CHLORIDE which is esssential sufficiently helping to ease muscle tension.

Tips two : Do a proper warm up & stretches for running at least 30mins. before the run.

Tips three : DO NOT! REMEMBER THIS! Do not bend your body forwards when having a long running session. Keep your body posture straight rather than bending forward. By bending forward you'll soon feel pain near those ribs area or stomach. So, always run with your body straight. That'll do the trick.

Tips Four: After finished running. If you felt hungry, BANANA is a very good quick fix energy food for that.

I WISH YOU SUCCESS TO THE FINISHING LINE.

To avoid the "stitch" as it is called, drink 64 ounces of water the day before, and try to get in at least 24 ounces before the run, but NOT RIGHT BEFORE or you will puke. Stretch, stretch, stretch and you'll be fine!
