its a kind of masterbatory action
all dogs like to have a piece of tail
if there is none around ,they go for there own ,
if we had tails ,we would also be running in circles
some people do anyway.

because dogs are very playful little (well, or big) animals, but, no offence to them, they aren't all that smart, so when they want to play tug-o-war, they see a "rope" behind them and "try" to tug on it. I had a friend whose dog would chase its tail and catch it, but then since he was biting on it he would start whining because it hurt, but he wouldnt let go of his tail. He didnt understand why his tail was hurting, if he was just biting a rope.

I wonder about that too. I have a Min Pin 4 1/2 mths. old and she does this once in a while. She is going around in a circle at about 100 mph....still she doesn't get dizzy!!! She is such a sweetie and so entertaining!

this behavior is most often seen in puppies that recently been separated from their littermates, and probably reflects the puppy's earlier play with its companions.
the pup may not immediately identify the tail as its own, the behavior is soon abandoned as the puppy grows and is harmless, provided that the puppy shows no sign of discomfort.

It's the age old question about the many things that dogs do. It's because they can!
