The egg.
It was laid by a Red Junglefowl, a Gallus species originating in Asia. It is not a chicken; it is, however, the ancestor of all chickens.
Somewhere down the line, one of the Red Junglefowl's eggs' DNA was mutated, and the egg produced a new kind of bird, a chicken. Which means, the Red Junglefowl's egg came before the chicken. And the first true chicken egg was laid by that chicken.

The egg.
The first chicken was a crossbreed or genetic mutation of whatever species laid the egg in the first place - ie - the first chicken's parents were not exactly chickens.
What came first the donkey or its mother. Neither - the parents were a horse and mule.
There actually is an answer to this question believe it or not!
I do realize I destroy the fun with such an answer, but in a sense, that is fun for me and plenty of opportunity for fun for you all when you rip me answer to shreds philosophically - I love philosophy.
rivr_rat - brilliant.

God created the first chickens and then gave them the ability to reproduce.
Same for Adam and Eve. That's why they would have had no belly buttons.
