You are in luck - there are many electric cars available or soon to be available this year.

An electric car can be had for as little as $5000. For this price you get a conversion - a gas car converted to electric. Cars like this look and handle like normal cars, and do freeway speeds, but have limited driving ranges. This is the kind of car I drive. More info here, see the links at the bottom of this page for cars to look at:

If you want a new electric car, here's an exciting one, coming out this year. It will go up to 250 miles on a charge, carries 5 people plus cargo, and can charge in only ten minutes. Info here:

The Phoenix will be expensive though, about $45,000. If you don't need to get on the freeway, you might like the Zap. It's a very fun vehicle that only costs $10,000.

Another interesting car is this Chinese import, which does freeway speeds, gets 200 miles per charge, and costs only $28,500:

Prices on electruc cars will come down, if people start buying them.

I'll bet you've never heard of any of these cars. Popular culture, with help from the media and various corporate interests, continues to propogate the myth that such cars are impossible. Join me - drive an impossible car!

There are 1,000s of used electric cars to choose from that fall into a few categories: OEM, CONVERSIONS AND HOMEMADE.

If you're looking for a "good" electric car, you'll want to choose an Original Equipment Manufacturer Electric Vehicle or a EV.

You can buy either a new or used OEM EV.

For a new one, check out GEM, Tesla, Phoenix, Universal, Venturi or ZAP for small vehicles.

For a used ones, look at the Toyota RAV-4, Ford Ranger or EV-1 on eBay or through networking.

Currently in the American marketplace, there are only two purely electric cars.

The first is the Tesla Roadster, which is about $90,000, only seats two people, but is fast, powerful, and can run for over five hours on one charge.

The second is a remanufactured Scion XB, turned into an electric car, and costs around $55,000, and that doesn't include the Scion. Altogether, about $70,000. The car is said to seat four people, takes a long time to charge, and can only run for three and a half hours on maximum charge. This seems like a waste of money to me.

A third option would be General Motor's now-dead EV1. This could only be purchased through select dealers, and used a Saturn frame, interior, and body from the late 1980s. It was sold in very limited numbers, and made practically no splash in the market. It only seats two people, is tiny, lightweight, and can run for about five hours between charges. This is the most practical electric car, but you can't buy a new one anymore.

If you insist on keeping the environment clean, think about buying a gas/electric hybrid or a biodiesel vehicle. Here's a short list of available, new hybrids on the American market:

- Gas/Electric Hybrids -
Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid
Ford Escape Hybrid
Honda Accord Hybrid
Honda Civic Hybrid
Honda Insight
Lexus LS600H
Lexus RX400H
Toyota Highlander Hybrid
Toyota Prius

Biodiesel vehicles are just standard diesels converted to run off of biodiesel fuel with a relatively inexpensive conversion kit. The problem is finding biodiesel in your area. Here's a brief list of available diesels in the American market, not including commercial-grade trucks:

- Diesel Vehicles -
Chevrolet Silverado
Dodge Ram
Ford Excursion
Ford F-Series
GMC Sierra
Mercedes-Benz C280 Diesel
Mercedes-Benz E320 Diesel
Volkswagen Beetle TDI
Volkswagen Golf TDI
Volkswagen Jetta TDI
Volkswagen Touareg V-10 TDI

I hope this has been of some help to you. If you need any information on any specific model(s), feel free to ask.

There are no electric cars, unless you're talking about golf carts and electric scooters. The only electric car that was in production was GM's EV1, which was halted and all crushed.
