can I have my cat fixed when she is in heat? if not, how long do I have to wait?

Most vets will not spay during heat. You have to wait until the heat is over then can take her in. Call your vet for their requirements for how long out of heat, it varies by vet.

Most vets I've known actually will spay when a cat is in heat. The reasoning is that after a female cat reaches sexual maturity, she is nearly always in one stage of being "in heat" (even if her behavior isn't different, there's still inflammation/swelling in the reproductive organs). And actually, spaying while she's demonstrating symptoms of being in heat lowers the risk of aborting kittens accidentally. Once she becomes pregnant, a female cat is no longer in heat and will stop behaving as such. There's an easy solution to this problem though. If you keep your unspayed female cat away from unneutered male cats, there's NO chance of aborting a litter because there's NO chance of her getting pregnant.

I doubt a vet will do the surgery while the cat is in heat. I don't know what the waiting period is post-heat. Call a large veterinary practice or clinic in your area. They should be able to give you a time frame. They may also have some suggestions for minimizing problems during the cat's heat cycle. Good luck!

Some vets will spay when a cat is in heat, others won't. Our vet will not do this however, because there is a alot of blood going to that area during their heat, and they lose more blood. I just recommend waiting until she is done, then get her spayed, it usually takes 2-3 weeks to get in to a Veterinary appointment anyway.

Yes you can, some vets will just charge you a little extra. Thier reasoning was the blood vessels are more enlarged or something. It will not hurt them or risk their lives, these are VETS, they know what they are doing. My cat was spayed when she was in heat and she was perfectly fine.

Looking at some of the other answers, why are some people confusing heat with pregnancy?

Take her to the vets first and have her checked to see if she pregnant. If she has had no contact with any male cat don't worry. Then see if the vet minds fixing her in heat. Each vet is different. I had my female done when she was in season and the vet was quite happy to do her. As he said, she was very hot to trot. Nice to see some one being responsible in the care of their cat.

We had a cat go into heat much younger than she was supposed to. Not only could we not deal with it, but there was already a stray male cat that hung around the house. If she had gotten out, there would have been all sorts of problems!

Our vet was willing to kennel her safely until they could safely perform the surgery and had an available surgical opening.

Please, please, please do not let your cat out or become pregnant. There are so many millions of animals (especially cats) that are killed each year by both humane and inhumane measures. If your cat does become pregnant you are, unfortunately, only adding the problem.

You can have your cat fixed while she's in heat. I had it done, and my cat was fine. As for the kitten issue, if your cat is an indoor cat as mine was, and hasn't been around a male, it shouldn't be an issue.

Yes, your cat can be spayed while in heat. Some vets will charge extra. I'm a vet tech and that was one of our surgeries last Friday. Just ask your vet if he/she will do it, if not, then I guess you will have to wait.
