All your internet activity is saved on the server it was routed through, pretty much for ever more, so as soon as anyone has suspicions that you are engaged in any kind of "legally challenged" activity, the records are data-mined, and if you have broken any laws you get busted. This can happen hours, days, months or even years after the act, depending on the statute of limitations...

Think about it, downloading copyright material is theft, pure & simple: if you drew a picture, or wrote a song or a story or a poem, and I came to your house and stole it without paying you anything or getting your permission, how would you feel about that?

Usually its the material itself that catches you. Your biggest risk isn't being caught , its what you catch. By downloading copyrighted material illegally you take a incredible risk of downloading viruses of the incredible nature. Most viruses of this nature attacks the very core of your anti-virus program because you allowed the virus to get by your anti-virus by bypassing it to download the software in the first place. You'll be surprised at the steps people are taking to protect there software from being downloaded illegally. Especially Microsoft, Virus makers love crating phony Microsoft programs because of the huge desire of the consumer to download them for free. So with this knowledge , Download awayyy.

by downloading from the wrong source, sometimes the companies that make movies put on a "bait file" which could be anything from a movie to a cd, then when u start downloading it...they get ur ip address and when they get that..they find out ur internet service provider and ur location, so they contact the company and tell them what u were doing and they request ur name and address, then they either send u an email or call u....or send someone to ur house..and ..what happens to u depends on how nice they are....u know illegal downloading is just like stealing....so if ur gonan do it..do it from a reputable source and don't get caught

RIAA files suit against a server host that transmits copyrighted material, they provide RIAA with a list of the IP's of all folks who downloaded files, based on how many files RIAA determines you downloaded they use your IP to find out who you are then they send you a nasty letter saying something like pay use 5 grand or we'll use you for 50....

how do you get caught....... by doing it!
what happens.... depending on the severity of copyright infringement, you can receive anywhere from a fine to time in jail added to the fine.
best thing to do... put any movie into a player and read that 'ATTENTION' screen at the beginning that you always skip or ignore, that will give you a good idea on jail time in years and dollars in numbers

your isp may flag your ip address if they notice massive download am mounts, but they rarely care. usually an anti-piracy group will download a file you are sharing (while at the same time obtaining your ip address), then ask your isp for your street address. many times the isp will deny their request and send you a cease and desist letter instead. but sometimes you just get a fine in the mail if the isp gives in to the anti-piracy group's pressure

Typically people are caught when they provide a medium for people to download the software from them.

People would have to report you to the authorities or they would have to be tapping your computer... it's most likely not gonna happen but if you get caught there will be a pretty substantial fine.

hmm when you steal it they have to monitor
and search for your IP adress then take time to search for specific house that has that certain IP
then they slam your face with a lawsuit suing you for taking copyrighted materials without permission of owner!!!
