First of all, learning is a balance between practical work and classroom. In fact, classroom can help accelerate your learning. If you want to learn fast, you'll need photo lessons.
Anyway, look for a professional photographer within your community and offer your services as an apprentice (for a small fee). Pros are always in need of assitants when covering social events.
Also, you may want to invest in a Digital SLR. FOr starters, a Nikon D80 or a Canon 30D would be good. But you will still need to learn the scientific way of taking photos. A great photo is a compromise of a lot of factors which you need to learn for you to be able to control. When you go pro, seldom will you shoot in "automatic" mode.
Seriously, if you love and enjoy photography, take the time to learn formally and balance this out with practical work.

The absolute best way: ready? skip college. find a GOOD photographer ( if you live in a small town, move. ) contact national geographic, and other nature magazines whose work you admire. Offer yourself as an intern, free assistant, whatever, to thier staff photographers. BE persistant, but not rude. Don't show them your work, yet. LEARN. Absorb what the pros do, say, think. Eventually you will start getting small assignments. TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY. Do you best. Time will come you will be a pro.
