In terms of the French Revolution, what was the "Beau Monde?"

I found out it means "Beautiful World" in French, but what, actually, was it? A group of people? A philosophy? I have no idea, please help! I need to know soon!

in the late 1700s, in fashionable society, the so-called Beau Monde were demanding independence, the French Revolution was brewing,causing major upheaval among the British nobility.

the "Beau Monde" refers to VIP's, the best people according to some criteria (either wealth, knowledge, fame, beauty.....)
