Attention New Yorkers.

A friend and I from Texas are looking at two sublets in our price range: one in Clinton Hill in Brooklyn and the other apartment is in Astoria, Queens. (Apartment sizes are about the same). Commuting to work won't be an issue (I think the subway commute times are the same to Midtown), but as two mid-twenties singles, we're looking to be around a fun, vibrant crowd with access to good restaurants and bars.

Which would you recommend?

If apartment size and price is the same I'd go with Clinton Hill (which should be more expensive), eventhough Astoria is a hair closer to Mid-town and has plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes (largely a Greek community with plenty of Italians).
Both neighborhoods are bordered by some of the grimiest areas in the country; Queensbridge and Bedford-Stuyvesant.

For a neighborhood within a borough, within a city; Astoria is pretty big and can vary greatly, from vibrant, to cozy, to classly to gritty. Clinton Hill isn't exactly homogeneous either.

Final answer; don't make a decision until you see the apartments in person and walk their immediate areas. Good luck

I live in Brooklyn and would highly recommend that you move to Brooklyn. The neighborhood of Clinton Hill is a vibrant and up and coming hip community, not too far from Manhattan for your commute. In terms of activities, not only does Clinton Hill have Pratt University, but a lot of cool restaurants and bars are nearby in Ft. Greene, Downtown Brooklyn, and Williamsburg.

Astoria is a bit remote in terms of commute and is more suited for sedate people or families more than a 20s, active crowd-seeking person.

Queens is a great area in NY to live. Everything is close such as shops, malls, good restaurants, bars, pharmacies, and many more other places. However, apartments in Queens are a lot nicer and cozier then in Brooklyn. I realized that because almost of my Brooklyn friends moving to Queens lol.

Texas to New York? What a change!

I like Queens but that's mainly because it's best for families. It's a little quieter and settled down. Clinton Hill, as I recall, is a decent area which is gentrifying right now. That may be your best bet.
