It is in the Bible. the versus are below. Some people will argue about what Paul meant- you should do your own research and perhaps come to your own interpretations. but here it is:
1 Corinthians 14
33 for G-d is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, so saith the law
35 and if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church

Yes, but it is not that simplistic. Women have a bigger roll in church and if you study the New Testament, play a bigger roll than men. Women can and were leaders in church, teachers and deacons. Just like as reflected in real life men and women had and have different roles to play. The Apostle Paul new that men and women had different needs and that Men were to teach men and that Older women were to mentor younger women. Just like today I don't think I have much to say to a women's group about women's problems, because I am a guy its dumb to think I would have any thing to offer. Men were to have a more visual leadership role but a women who rocks the cradle, runs the house hold, and cares for a husband has far more power than what most people give credit for. Look at the women who were in Jesus's life it is very powerful especially in this time period. The promise given by God that the women's heal would crush the head of the serpent and that the Church is the Bride of Christ shows what respect is given women, but if you do not believe you cannot be expected to understand. If you are asking a biased question and do not have an open mind then I ask you this; does Islam give this respect to women how about the other great religions, and do you care if they do or not or are you trying to bash Christians with this question?

Depends on the church. There are some christian organizations that have women preachers. There are others that I've heard about that would not allow this, or that make the men and women sit separately.
There are many verses in the bible, and in some cases there is even more than one way to deduce the meaning of a verse.

Do you mean the Catholic Church?
Women in Latin America have a strong presence in church, and when their voices rise they are respected.
I don't think the Bible teaches such a thing like that.
Try to read the book called "The red tent", by Anita Diamond, an excellent look at the woman's place and influence in the Ancient Testament.

There is a verse in 1 Corinthians that says that women should remain silent in church. But a lot of people rationalize that one away with some context.
I think it's important to remember that the Bible was written in a time when women had very few rights. So yes, it is likely going to have some passages that seem sexist. Remember that times have changed since then.
Peace.

Corinthians 14:33-35 states, "...As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church."

No the bible does not.
Neither does the bible teach that woman are evil.
Otherwise there would not be : Holy Virgin Marry
And the humongous amount of female saints.
The females are however not allowed to be a preacher,
a priest or enter the Ortodox altars....but that has another
symbolical reason.
A woman is in no way discriminated in the bible.
People who say diffrent lie.

women can teach women, children or teens
women can lead vacation bible schools or mission activities... and discuss and vote in meetings
women cannot authoritatively prescribe doctrine the way a pastor would in my opinion
a woman with special abilities can have seminars on that, could be related to architecture, hosptitality, outreach, etc etc... just not excersise authority over a adult man
there are sincere disagreements here

The church (community) has come a long ways since the dark days of strictly zombie like behavior.
I have never heard of such a rule. If you can't talk in the House of the Lord, where can you talk? It's no longer considered only a place of worship but also fellowship.
