I'm not looking for something basic. I want something that allows for custom DVD's and slide shows, with a great number of transitions to choose from. Ease of uploading the pictures into the program is important also. Thank you for any information you can give from experience.

Cyberlink Power Director will allow you to work with a timeline and has a lot of various Transistions.
Cyberlink Power Producer allows you to customize DVD menus.
Typically I create an MPEG in Power Director and than use Power Producer to create the DVD I want.
Note: This company seems to not understand that sometimes you have to insert blank space in your timeline. I got around this by building an MPEG from a muted song.

i recommend Nero Startsmart because it honestly is the best software i have used. You not only get to create the Dvd slideshow on it but you also get to burn the DVD on the same program and it's really easy because it guides you step by step through the process. The results are really good because Nero has excellent 3d transitions that make it look reallly cool and it hasn;t failed me yet. Hope this helps
