I have a ten year old son who is overweight. I just went to the doctor and got a referral for him to see a nutritionalist. The reason being is that I have tried to teach him that fruits and veggies are important, but he just won't eat them. He is addicted to carbohydrates. Bread in any shape or form. He also eats big portions and eats too fast. I have tried to teach him to read the suggested serving size on boxes and such... but it hasn't helped. I want him to talk to a nutition specialist who works with preteens and teens and get him on the right track now. I am not worried quite as much about the wieght, I am more concerned about teaching him proper portion sizes and proper eating habits. I feel that once he learns those along with excersize ( which we do) he'll eventually slim down. I bet by the time he's in high school everything will even out. I would talk to your doc about how you feel about your son's weight and see what he/she recommends. Diets at this age can be harmful, and put your child in a bad mindset about weight for the rest of his life. I would concentrate on teaching him what is good and healthy, food and exercise, and the best way to do that is by being a participant and doing the same thing. If he really is soo constipapted than I would add more fruit and bran. Flax seed is awseme. You can't see it or taste it, you just add a bit to some home made muffins or other baking that your child will eat and it will help him become more regular. Good Luck.

Sounds like my 3 year old daughter. She's a picky eater but I try to get her to eat fruits , veggies, and whole grains. This doesn't always work so I've also bought FiberSure which is a soluable fiber powder you can sprinkle into food as you are cooking or baking to get that extra boost of fiber the whole family can benefit from.

I myself am in the midst of struggling with constipation and hemmorrhoids. Oh yes, I am only 24 years old (25 next month).
What helps me is that I take fiber therapy pills. The pills are rather large and it may be hard for a 10 yr old to swallow. But you can buy the Benefiber that you can mix in water. He won't taste anything.
As for the diet, stick to fruits and vegetables. Reduce bread and meat as they have a tendency to make bowel movements irritable. Limit soda intake. In fact, drink water! My grandmother told me that stir fry helps as well

fruits and veggies...switch more items to whole grain, reduce refined sugar
Find a yummy recipe for morning glory muffins.
Also, there is something out there called "power pudding". A reduction of pears, prunes and bran. Guarantied to get things goin'
