emo is a few things.

what it originally was, was a style of music back in the 80s-90s, known as emotive hardcore.

now, people will tell you that emo means emotional
its supposed to be a style of music where the song/lyrics are depressing, which includes: acoustic rock, post-hardcore bands where the singer has a high or soft voice, and also pop-rock bands (like mcr, p!atd, falloutboy) but those poprock bands are usually considered emo just because of the way the band dresses.

besides the music, its also a stereotype and fasion.
the stereotype is pretty much anyone whos depressed, dark, cut themselves, etc..

the fasion is a harder to describe because it keeps changing..so
what i remember it first being:
1. people with short hair, rectangle shaped glasses, vintage/retro look.
2. people who wear all tight black clothes, had a bandana maybe... like how from first to lasts look.. kind of.. (not goth tho)
3. people with long hair swooshed to one side, coverin one eye.

It literally means someone who is so depressed that they cut thier wrists typically with razor blades. Its also a style among teenagers that is a derivitave of punk and goth mixed together. Also, it can be noticed by long black hair.
