over the counter and cheap. just don't expect too much. it helps a little. i use it because i have always had insomia problems and any little nonaddictive thing helps. some things like nytol will damage your heart. melatonin is harmless as far as i know. but that reminds me i aint the sharpest pencil in the box. lol

I believe melatonin was in trials before registration but caused some problem in pregnant women. My GP respects the decision to withdraw it but encouraged me (male, 53) to get hold of it if I could. She said it would be better than Zopiclone to help me sleep. I picked up some in a drugstore on a trip to New York. It works well. Zopiclone does too. I don't know what would suit your son, but there are many options now. What I like best is herbal Nytol!

It is definitely over the counter, it is don-dependent (so you can't get addicted to it and it won't hurt you if you stop taking it) and it doesn't technically help you sleep... it helps you relax. Melatonin is a substance your brain makes that relaxes your muscles and your mind. Sometimes your brain doesn't make enough and you can't sleep, and so to remedy this you can take Melatonin. It also works great for jet-lag. Once your body and mind are relaxed, you'll sleep like a baby... I wouldn't recommend taking anything else.

I thought it was something you could get at a health store. i take sublingual melatonin and it helped my insomnia. Just be careful to never take it unless you will be in bed for the next few hours as sunlight can cause damage to your eyes from it.

This is over the counter. Helps to regulate sleep cycles. I believe it is a natural herb.
You can find it at Walgreens, Walmart, etc.

You should not put any substance in your mouth to help you sleep. Not because of morality but because it is bad for your body's normal system. Maybe you should rethink your lifestyle choices. I did. Less work, more relaxation, and I sleep like a baby!
