Meat is produced by the pound and bread is baked by the quantity of loaves. A normal hot dog is about 1/10th a pound, hence ten to a packet. Jumbo hot dogs are about 1/8th a pound, For the meat packers this is just for simplicity's sake. It gives you a one-to-one ratio, a thousand pounds of meat produces a thousand packs of hot dogs, no complicated arithmetic to work out. Bakers aren't concerned with pounds, only loaves, so they can be a bit more logical in their packaging. Eight buns fit neatly into a bag in two rows of four, giving you an ample quantity of buns without making the bag too large or awkward to handle. Also common, twelve buns arrange nicely into three rows of four.

Because it's their way of making you buy another pack of buns so you can eat the 2 hot dogs left, but then you will have 6 more buns left, which would make you buy more hot dogs so you can eat the buns. Then, having 4 hot dogs left, you will be forced to buy another pack of 8 buns, and when you finish those, you will still have 4 buns left, so you will buy another pack of 10 hot dogs. When you are done with THOSE, you will have 6 hot dogs left, and you will buy yet ANOTHER pack of 8 buns, and when you eat them, you will have 2 buns left, and you will buy another pack of 10 hot dogs, and when your done you will have 8 hot dogs left, and then you can buy your FINAL pack of 8 buns.
Simply put : Marketing. No one wants to waste food, right?

cuz the hot dog people know that if they have less buns in the bag that you will go out and buy more buns. So the bun company is making money out of this. Cuz you are buying more hot dog buns just to have enough weenies to make them.

I don't know where you're from... but here in California for the last 15 years... I've bought dogs and buns in packages of 8. Three different grocery stored, different brands... EIGHT and EIGHT.
It's almost an urban-legend... only believed by those who don't shop or cook.

That's an old and often asked question that no one has the answer to. It would just make too much sense (and the bun companies would lose sales because you wouldn't have to buy 2 packages)

It's just a way for them to make money because they know you're going to have to buy more buns. It's stupid, but as a sales technique works very well.
