I see you have a male cat, is he neutered? Intact males will have a strong odor to their urine to it and it is a very unpleasant smell. If he is not fixed he will start marking his territory by spraying urine. Since he spends alot of time outdoors, he may already be doing this outdoors. If he is not neutered, getting your cat fixed could solve the problem.
If he is fixed, a visit to the vet is needed to rule out problems such as an urinary tract infection, bladder infection, other health problems.

Hello there, There could be several reasons why this could happen; *It may have been a mistake and he was so desperate he just went. *He is trying to tell you something has upset him. (Has anything changed int he household recently such as a new pet or family member?) *He is trying to tell you that somehting is wrong (He may be suffering from a UTI infection which can be very painful for them so to be on the safe side I would go to the vet to double check especially if he keeps going to the toilet outside of his litter tray) Also you shouldnt need to re-train him as he will already know what to do. But If nothing changes after you have been to the vet then I would try training him again. And everytime he messes outside of the tray to put him back in the tray even if he has been. Regularly scoop the tray if you dont. Maybe his brother is not allowing him to use the the litter tray so get another one just incase. Best of Luck, I hoped that this helped in some way, Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Regards. =^..^=

Ay up fellow boltonian!
I definitely think that neutering will help, but I'm wondering why you still have a litter tray? By the time all of my male cats were about 9 months old they had stopped using the litter tray and were only going outside. It is't essential to have one at this stage and I think your cat is only weeing it in because he wants to make a smell (marking his territory)
So unless it's essential (ie, you can't manage to let the cat in and out often enough) I'd lose the litter tray.
hope that helps.

You need to either double up layers or get new litter. A best choice for litter would be a non-dusty or non-smelly ones. Cats get infections from dusty litter and do not use smelly litter (ex. Fresh step) Also get a litter box instead of a tray. Cats like privacy.

nasty stuff that catsan. Get yourself some wood based litter. It smells of pine when they piddle. It is very economical too. In a normal sized litter tray, put only a mugfull of litter which will barely cover the bottom. As they pee it breaks down an expands.

try a different, more expensive litter like fresh step
also try getting a scented litter
you can also get a cat litter box instead of a tray

Try using "Bob Martin" cat litter crystals. Available from asda etc.
It's quite pricey, but it absorbs the "niff" extremely well and lasts for ages before needing changed. Saves a lot of cash in the long run!! (don't go for the little beady stuff in a box,it gets everywhere.Go for the crystals, which come in a bag) Good luck with your smelly cat!

Yes - when you change the tray, sprinkle some sodium bicarbonate liberally in with the litter, ti absorbs odours.

BTW if your cat is male and his urine smells very strong, have you had him spayed? If not, doing so will almost certainly make his urine not smell so strongly.

get one of those litter boxes, (it looks like a pet carry box).

this will help to contain the smell and catsan has those little pellets right?

i dont use an expensive one, just a cheap tesco one (probably a 'dusty' one as someone else described, its kinda chalky but ive never had any problems) but its alot better then catsan cos it absorbs the urine and the smell, not completely but most of it.

also, strong smelling, dark in colour urine could mean he needs to drink more water:)
