My 6th month old Yorkie is contantly chewing my hands and biting me. He has plenty of chew toys but prefers people! Do I have to use a training aid or is this something he will eventually grow out of?

Yes, to some extent. He is in the extreme chewing phase right now, and should slow down within a few more months. However, you have to teach a dog that teeth on people is NOT okay. They normally learn this from other dogs, starting with their littermates; it's called bite inhibition. They miss out on this training if they are taken home too soon or not given access to other dogs throughout puppyhood.

The good news is, your dog views you as pack leader, so you can teach him yourself. When he puts his teeth on your skin, yelp loud and high pitched until he lets go; don't pull away, because he might think you are playing along. If he continues, ignore him, then resume playing when he calms down. If he does it yet again, walk away and end the play session. You will feel like it's not working, but after a few months he will almost never put his teeth on your skin, or he will do it as gently as possible.

I personally have a Yorkie, he is almost 3 now.. To answer your question.. Yes they do grow out of it.. However you do need to make sure that the chewing is directed towards one of their own toys or bones and not your leather couch or favorite pair of shoes.. Yorkie's are great lil dogs!

Welcome to Yorkie world! Yes, he will stop but you will need to work with the puppy. Every time he starts to chew on your hand or fingers just say NO in a firm voice and eventually they catch on. I have had a Yorkie all my life and everyone of them had the same trait...you will see results if YOU are consistent with saying NO every time the puppy starts to chew on you. Yorkies are adorable but they need and want training.

Your puppy will grow out of biting things and people. Right now he's biting because his teeth are agitating him. He just needs toys to chew on.

Well he will grow out of it, but you can't keep letting him chew and bite at your hands. You have to tell him no and eventually he will learn.

its pretty normal and he should grow out of this but the thing i did with my german shephard that might help is feeding him out of your hands and if he bites during that time take away the food for about 10 seconds after several feedings like this he may begin to understand that he shouldn't bite

when he dose it replace your hand with a toy, but before you take your hand away tell him NO and then give him the toy. but you have to do it everytime, that is the trick with animals the human has to be consistant. you dont need to feed him out of your hand that will only teach him to beg when hes near you. eventually he will stop. remember consistancy is key!!

give him a tasty big bone from the pet store, that will keep him busy, don't allow him to bite anyone.
