Your doctor is checking out all possibiliites which is what a good doctor will do. A bone scan will show him if there are any breakdowns, damage, tumors, diseases or conditions (such as arthritis) affecting your bones. It can help diagnose any long standing undiagnosed pain. No, it will not show ligaments but will show your spine very nicely. He may have mentioned strained ligaments but he needs to rule out all possibilities in order to be sure of a correct diagnosis so that the proper treatment can be used.
