Global warming it the biggest negative issue humanity as a whole has to face today.
I asked myself the same questions about a month ago. Then I watched "An Inconvenient Truth" and "To Hot Not To Handle". If you don't like al gore, don't watch the first one, but there is a lot of great information in both of these that will answer a lot of your questions about Global warming. I believe that National Geographic has one out as well about the issue.
In EXTREMELY short: Global warming is the overall average tempurature of the Earth that is on the rise over the years. CO2 acts as a blanket that shields the heat from leaving our atmosphere. The Sun heats the Earth and the excess CO2 in the atmosphere causes the heat waves that bounce off of the Earth's surface to remain in the atmosphere.
1. This causes the melting of snow and ice that otherwise would remain frozen.
2. It also causes more intense huricanes and more desserts.
3. Many more deaths from heat waves have been reported in the last few years than any other time in history. More will follow.
4. If all of the snow melts, the west side of the US would not have fresh drinking water. 75% of their water comes from melting ice (To Hot Not to Handle).
5. If this bad use of our Earth continues, our great grand children will never see a glacier and will never feel snow.
6. They will have a lot more diseases than we have today because it will not get cold enough to kill them off. Maleria has already become a huge issue, when it use to be something noone cared or worried about.
7. India is not the only country that will suffer from flooding. If all of the ice melts, Florida's entire southern tip will be under water. see where the water level is on a map now and then add 20 feet of water to the map. There are a lot more places that will be lost or sunken cities.
8. A lot of the smaller islands that people like to vaccation too will be under water.
9. The Coral reefs will be dead because it will be to hot for the fish to live in.
10. Wales will die, because there will be no planktin to feed on. because the water will be to hot and there will be no sea plants to feed on.
11. Polar bears have already been found drowned, because there was not a mass of ice where their use to be for them to stay on. Polar bears will become extinct (among other plants and animals).
12. We will no longer have fresh water to drink.
CO2 is produced by many things. But the most notable change occured when the industrial age hit. This was when factories were being built and burning fossil fuels. Oil and gas in our cars, coal, etc.
A lot of electric companies offer "green" energy, but you have to request it. Green energy comes from wind, solar and hydro power, there are other sources, like using trash to make fuel, etc. I am using Reliant Energy and they charged 1 cent per kilowatt more when I requested to switch to green energy. I use about 300-400 killowatts per month for my 2 room apartment, so that was only $3.00 - 4.00 more per month. It is worth it. There are also hybrid cars that cut emissions way down. (they will be cheaper when they are used in a couple of years)
Here is a link to some things that you can do to help reduce CO2 emissions.

One more thing...
Article titled : UN’s Kyoto treaty against global warming comes into force
On: official UN site: http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=13359&Cr=global&Cr1=warm
..."So far 140 countries have ratified the accord."...“While the Government of the United States has decided against the Kyoto treaty, many individual states in America are adopting or planning to adopt greenhouse gas reductions in line with the spirit of the Protocol,”...“Never before has the negative impact of climate change been more evident than the recent devastating weather conditions resulting in widespread hurricanes, cyclones, tropical storms, tidal waves, tsunamis in various parts of the world, particularly affecting small island developing states. These small countries are the most vulnerable to global climate change,”
Bush has oil interests in the US and in other countries. That is what made his family wealthy. Of course he does not want people to switch to green energy, then we could not have a war in Iraq over oil and he would loose all of the money from his oil industries. Thank god for a free country! I am looking forward to the next president.
Hope this helps. check out the movies, they are easy to watch and full of information.

On its own, global warming is indeed problematic. A lot of it depends on where you live, and places that are impacted likely do not have as much say as to what goes on. But, in conjunction with global warming, we also got Peak Oil. Basically, we've hit about the halfway point in world oil production, so now we start to enter a period where prices for crude oil will increase as its availability begins to drop. Let's also consider, it will mostly be the young people paying the price as these events unfold. They will not be pleased.

Don't listen to all the hype and hysteria. Global Warming is a complete farce based totally on junk science. Mother Nature has a unique way of balancing the good against the bad. The earth has been going through warming and cooling cycles for billions of years and will continue to do so. I guarantee in 10 years we'll be worried about "Global Cooling".

yes, if we dont wise up......which its already a little late we will freeze..now while it is warm glaciers r melting too fast therefore putting too much fresh water into our salt water oceans this causes a great imbalance too long to explain...in 20yrs. from NOW Europe will begin to feel the effects of global warming in 50yrs we will the United States.......if u dont have proper gear u will freeze to death if u go outside and transportation will be snowmobiles, sleds and the like........scary watch National Geographics they have info. on their shows once in awhile..that's where this small piece of info. came from...

If the polar ice caps melt, Indiana will have a seacoast. Look at a U.S. map if you don't understand how severe that is.
