It offers a lot of personal and creative satisfaction but it's one of those professions that you have to really have desire and love to do because large monetary rewards are often not there. That said, i wish i had started when i was 20 instead of 40 because it's really a young person's career with lot's of opportunity to branch out into peripheral fields (food writing, consulting, etc) if you have a true love for it. good luck

It's a good and very rewarding profession. Very interesting. However, you also must give up all nights and weekends.

I loved doing it for 10 years! But I retired.

i think it really depends on the person, I have been cooking for over 15 yrs and I have my times of completely hating it and never wanting to cook again to times of complete enjoyment and satisfaction.
Cooking is one of the most stressful careers available, demanding long hours, constant preformance with little room for breaks and down time. I have at times worked in places for yrs without lunch breaks or set schedule.
On the other hand I have learned much, and had many oppurtunites to meet new people and job security, people always have to eat.
Many people choose to go to culinary schools to futher them selves, which is great, but i would start in the business and later decided if school is worth it. Including myself I have worked with many cooks who went on to become Chefs without school, and I have seen many come out of school clueless as to how to preform in the real world.
It really is what you make of it, lots of good oppurtuniies with lots of competition.
Me personally I love to cook, but I am not very fond of the business side, very political, agressive and sometimes unfair.
Think about it, you go out to dinner and tip the person that brings it to you, not the guy that cooks it.
And usually the server is making more then the cook. Like I said stressful but I love to preform and get a good rush out of a busy night with happy guest.

I think if you love to do what you get paid to do, then it's a good profession.

Too many hours to little pay. No weekends or nights or holidays are free. Otherwise sure
