Just strike up a NORMAL everyday conversation, and then hopefully you'll be able to insert some humor as you go along.
I'm old, but I thought I was going to get a date one time when I pretended to be frightfully afraid of the item scanner in a gift shop as she was using it. The girl laughed hard and I probably could have asked her out!

WELL, FIRST JUST SAY ANYTHING TO GET HER ATTENTION. AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF TALKING TELL HER THAT IT WAS NICE TALKING TO HER AND SAY THAT YOU ARE IN A HURRY AND HAVE TO GO.(REMEMBER DURING THE CONVERSATION YOU HAVE TO FIND OUT AT LEAST ONE THING THAT SHE LIKES DOING). THEN RIGHT BEFORE YOU LEAVE ASK HER FOR HER PHONE NUMBER. CALL HER IN A FEW DAYS AND TELL HER THAT YOU ARE DOING THE THING THAT SHE TOLD YOU ABOUT IN THE PREVIOUS CONVERSATION AND INVITE HER. (DON'T EVER ASK IF SHE WOULD LIKE TO GO OUT WITH YOU.) IF FOR SOME REASON SHE SAYS THAT SHE IS BUSY, JUST TELL HER THAT SHE IS MISSING OUT AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT GIRL.

Whatever you do, don't compliment her more than once, or tell her you like her!! Trust me
What you should do, is you should say hi and start a conversation,
Later if you have more, traet her as though you have known each other a long time, tease her, humor her and conversate, this will get her attracted to you

Find something that you might both have in common -- a class that you both have taken, a book that she is carrying, ....
Ask her about her cell phone features.... ask her about the music she has on her iPod....
Or just compliment her on her clothes.
Just find something to start a conversation, and go from there.
