Inflammation of the esophagus causes the air not to flow of your vocals and you end up with little or no souund.

This very reason, is why singers should not smoke or yell, because they strain the vocals.

Losing your voice involves many factors. Most common cause is a viral/bacterial infection that causes the larynx and other tissue in your respiratory system to inflame. Inflammation and edema(swelling) together causes the impaired speech.

Your vocal folds are delicate and need TLC - they do lots of work for you all day and when you're ill, it makes their job really hard. They work by moving together to create vibrations (sound, or VOICE). When you're ill, they can swell and get covered in phlegm which alters their functioning and the subsequent sound/voice. The more you cough, the worse it gets as your VFs just get more irritated by the constant banging together as you cough. Your body produces more phlegm to protect them which make you wanna cough even more. Hope that helps!
