I assume you are a dependent and unmarried.

Use form 1040EZ which you can print from the link below. Hopefully you will get some or all of your withholding back.

Here is Form 1040EZ Booklet which has everything you need to file including descriptions of how to e-file or mail in your return.

If you also had state income taxed withheld, find your state department of revenue website and get those forms.

You can probably use the simplest of the tax forms, 1040EZ, to file your federal taxes. If you made over $5150 and are claimed by your parents as a dependent, or if you made over $8450 total, then you are required to file. If you made less than these amounts, then you should file to get a refund of your federal withholding that was taken out of your paycheck. You will not get back amounts withheld for social security or medicare.

If you're a dependent, you will check the box on the 1040EZ that asks if you are.

Depending on where you live, there might also be state or local taxes that you either have to pay, or will get refunded to you. Rules are different in every state. There might be state and local returns you have to file also.

Since you are still a student, there is no minimum on how much you make. You can file your taxes and still be claimed as a dependent. The whole amount of your federal tax is what will be refunded to you.

Your parents will likely try to claim you until you're 24 if you're in college that long. The only thing that can really stop them is if you move out and begin supporting yourself.

You can let them have the exemption, and then you can file your own taxes and claim yourself again for partial credit on the back of form 1040ez.

Do your parents claim you on their taxes? We cant answer this question unless you tell us what state you live in because it is diffrent from state to state.
