I think a lot of fundamentalists are born into that culture. If your taught that from the time your little, I think it can make it nearly impossible to ever develop any critical thinking skills. I think it would be very difficult for them to imagine living any differently. I'm sure it gives there life a great sense of purpose. unfortunately, it's all bullsh*t.

I also strongly agree with new grad. My mother has had serious mental health issues her whole life (borderline personality disorder, heavily leaning toward multiple personality disorder). She became a born again fundamentalist Christian. I've heard this is common for people with problems similar to hers, because it gives them a rigid structure to live there lives according to, since they lack internal stability. Not that all fundamentalists have those serious problems, but I think it's the same thing. Desperate for stability from the outside, instead of stability from within.

No, they become fundamentalists Christians, because God has shed the light of His glorious Love upon their hearts and OPENED their minds to the TRUTH of His Word.

They struggle with thinking for themselves. Fundamentalists regardless of religious affiliation all share the desire to have rigid structure because they (subconsously) are not aware of their own power to trust themselves. It is the easy way out, similar to pressing the easy button.
Hope this helps. :-)

Speaking of brains - how large of one does it take to ask a question like this. They settle into their beliefs because that is the way they see it and understand. You don't know anything about their brains and are only asking this question to validate your puny little opinion. Worry about your own brain - it can use it.
