My husband gets these horrible cramps in his butt/anus/rectum (not sure which to call it). They are so bad he will sit in a hot jacuzzi tub for an hour trying to get it to go away. Many times this doesn't help. Sometimes, they come after a bowel movement. Other times, it's just out of the blue, though. It's very disturbing to him. And he's too embarrassed to see a doctor about it. This has been going on for several years, and I would like to see him find some sort of relief for it.

You know what....this is a serious question! I don't appreciate comments that would imply that my husband is homosexual, a filthy slob, or an idiot!

There's always more info to add once you start getting responses...... My husband eats very healthy: We grind our own whole wheat flour, and rarely buy anything with white flour in it. He eats lots of veggies and fruit. He doesn't set aside time for focused exercise, but is pretty active. Is certainly not overweight.....is 5'11' and has finally gotten up to 165 lbs. Not exactly the ideal candidate for digestive problems.

Ask him if it when the cramps happen he is gassy? Sometimes a person can have cramp like pains in that area because a build up of gas in his intestines; which is putting extreme pressure on them. Mabye if he can connect the pains with exsessive gas then he can take gas-x or something along that line.
And what a typical man............tell him to go to the doctors NOW. It could definintely be a serious problem!
I READ YOUR FOLLOW UP AND IT SIMPLY SOUNDS LIKE THE ONLY ANSWER YOU NEED IS FROM A DOCTOR. TELL HIM IF HE DOESN'T HAVE IT CHECKED OUT NOW THEN HE WILL HAVE NO CHOICE WHEN HE HAS BOWEL CANCER OR SOMETHING ELSE.

If he sits in a hot tub or jacuzzi and sometimes it gives him relief, it could be hemorrhoids. It could be a polyp, which could be cancerous or not cancerous. If it has been going on for years, then it's not a simple case of food poisoning. He needs to go to a gastroenterologist and have a colonoscopy to determine what the problem could be. Everyone is certainly embarrassed by this, but believe me, they treat you with respect. A colonoscopy is not at all painful (as opposed to an upper GI endoscopy which is). I slept through my last one. Gastroenterologists have seen it all, and they derive a great deal of job satisfaction out of making people feel better! Why should your husband deny this doctor pleasure from making him feel better?!!!
Probably your husband needs to get more exercise, eat better, lose weight and so on, but first of all he needs to go to the doctor. If it is cancerous or even pre-cancerous he would want to know now. Please persuade him in the strongest terms.

Sometimes cramps are caused by a lack of potassium. Might try taking some or eating bananas.

hemmoroids? I suggest seeing a doctor...there is nothing to be embarrassed about, I'm sure they have seen worse...and he should get it seen before it gets worse! Your husband will be so relieved once it has been taken care of.

You are right it is quite likely serious and he should be seen by a doctor. He could have an anal fissure, strangulated hemorrhoids or worse cancer.
