I've been researching this and reading reviews, talking to everyone that owns a gun, gun dealers, etc. The Glocks are great , but they're too popular to get a decent deal. The Springfield XD is a great deal right now. A friend of mine just picked up a new 45 with case, 2 mags, holster for $450.00
I decided to go with a Bersa Thunder Ultra Compact 45 .
After reading all the reviews I could find from only qualified writers, ( those that shoot every gun out there with no bias)
I went with the Bersa. The best bang for the buck, no pun intended. It's a great gun. Small enough for me to carry concealed, but with the punch of a 45. The dealer I bought from spent time in Iraq with a 9mm, and has used 40 S&W, and he now carries a 45 and convinced me to do the same. Happy shopping.

Real broad question. You can get an auto pistol in any caliber from .22 to .50. Prices can range from dirt cheap to thousands of dollars.
I am going to assume you are looking for something like your .357 in a auto. So, we are looking at 9mm, 357 sig, 40, and 45. The cheapest of these calibers can be had with a Hi-Point gun. They are butt ugly, but will shoot when you pull the trigger. Taurus makes a nice selection of these calibers for prices from about $350 to $500. HK, Sig, Beretta also make these but you are getting up to the $700 to $900 range. Used guns are always a bit cheaper but you might be buying somebody's problem.

Since you're a Smith fan, why not check out their new Military&Police line of autos? They look really good, and I've heard good things about them.

Of, if you're on a budget, try one of the older stainless Smith autos, like the 59 Series in 9mm, the 40 Series in(you guessed it) .40 S&W or the 45 Series in guess what caliber? They're all really sweet pistols, and are out there for really low prices with the advent of all the new technology these days. I miss my 4506-1, it was a huge, stainless beast of a gun, but wow, it could shoot a dust mite off a gnat's ***(No, I didn't get video).

Since you are already familar with a paowerful round (.357) you might want to consider the Taurus PT1911 (.45). Its received alot of good press and excellent feedback from the gun boards. I've handled one at the gun shop and it felt really nice. Price wise, its only $500, a steal considering all you get.

In the same price range as the Taurus PT1911 but very concealable is the Glock 26 (9mm). This is one of the best conceal carry pistols on the market today with many extras you can buy later. I prefer the 9mm due to the small size of the pistol, anything caliber larger and it starts to effect you'r follow-up shot.

There are a lot of factors you didn't specify, what exactly are you looking for, size, caliber, etc. Sizewise there are many pistols to choose from. Ruger P series semi autos are decent quality semi autos and range from 9mm up to .45 ACP. They are relatively small in size, and come in either all metal or metal/polymer combos. They range from about $350-$500 depending on model, options, etc. If you are looking for a large frame semi, i would check out Springfield Armory's 1911 .45s. They are one of the nations oldest gunmakers and one of the finest 1911 manufacturers. They make dozens of different models, in different barrel lengths, finishes, options, etc. They range from $500 up to $2000 and up. The XD pistols from SA are supposed to be great pistols as well. They come in 9mm, .40, .45 GAP, .45 ACP, come in many colors, barrel lengths, etc. I would check them out as well. I have heard pluses and minuses from Glock, Sig, Kimber. I would look into the Springfield Armory pistols, you should be able to find what you want there.

Find a used Russian Makarov. 100% reliable, and usually $150-200 just about anywhere. Get a set of rubber replacement grips for it and you're set. They really are difficult to beat for value.

Other than that, I would recommend the Taurus 24/7 or Millenium pistols. Affordable and very comfortable to handle. Try 'em out.

The "Glock" mod. 23C in .40 cal. The Glock semi - autos are virtually indestructible. Made of polymer, you can drop them from a third story building and they will keep on shooting. Here is a link to all the Glock semi's. Alot of good info about the way they are made and the features of the handgun. One thing I like is the three position safety which only comes on the Glock semi's. There is no external safety to have to release before firing. It is all implemented on the trigger mechanism. Check out the info. Happy reading...
