I'd go with Air New Zealand only because the seat pitch is better. Although Singapore Airlines has a better inflight entertainment system, I find the seats a little 'tight' at only 31" pitch (measured from front of your seat cushion to the front of the seat cushion of the seat in front of you), but Air New Zealand's seat pitch is 34". The Inflight Entertainment system also is quite good. For one thing, you are guaranteed to be able to watch all 3 Lord of the Rings video, plus a whole range of recent movies!

I flew Air New Zealand recently to HongKong, and the service was really good, the flight attendants are excellent, and the food was good too.

On Air New Zealand, they have 2 flights a day. One flies via HongKong on a 747-400, and the other flies via LAX on a 777-200ER. The latter is a bid inconvenient to people because of the US immigration which you have to clear. However, if you don't mind, you may opt to take a special Around the World ticket valid for one year, which allows you to fly one direction , and return the other, with stops along the way. Which means you can stop in HK on way to New Zealand, and then when returning you may stop in Los Angeles on your return.

Both Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand are good. However both airlines also offer very good fares which you cannot earn any 'air miles' on. Check out the differences in which you are allowed to earn miles and compare the differences. In the UK, British Midland's Diamond Club is a free frequent flyer programme which you may earn mileage on on either carrier plus any of the Star Alliance's airline partners. Even if you fly only once a year, it is worth investing in an airline Frequent Flyer programme which you may earn mileage with. You do not have to be flying in business or first class to earn mileage!

PS - there are other airlines that would also good fares other than the 2 you mentioned. There's THAI AIRWAYS via Bangkok, MALAYSIA AIRLINES via Kuala Lumpur, EMIRATES via Dubai, CATHAY PACIFIC via HongKong.

Of these, THAI AIRWAYS and MALAYSIA AIRLINES have the same seat pitch as AIR NEW ZEALAND in economy class - 34". The latter two offer similar seat pitch as Singapore Airlines - 31-32". Trust me, that extra 2" makes all the difference in the world on a long flight!

SINGAPORE SINGAPORE SINGAPORE SINGAPORE SINGAPORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This admission makes me sad, because I'm fiercely loyal about all things kiwi. I flew Perth-Auckland recently and was soooo disappointed. The food was terrible, the entertainment cheap, and while the staff weren't exactly rude they weren't warm or approachable either.

The experience left me quite embarrassed - this airline is representing my country internationally!

It seems similar to a lot of other things I've noticed in the last 5 years, mostly centering around services. NZ had such a great reputation for so many years for being such a great clean green warm friendly country, and it's like we're so assured we're at the top of that game that while the rest of the world have identified, copied, and now surpassed our skills NZ has been too busy resting on it's laurels to notice.

So, yeah, fly Singapore Air. Planes are clean, staff are friendly, approachable AND consummately professional, food is really yummy AND plentiful, and the entertainment really is totally top notch. I flew Singapore Air Heathrow-Auckland recently so I like to think I know what I'm talking about.

And THAT'S all I have to say about THAT.

Good luck with your travel.

Singapore Airlines especially in economy! Even on the Lonon/Singapore leg, there's enough movies, tv shows, games on the in-flight entertainment system even if you cannot sleep for 14 hours. Greater choice of food and drinks.

Not sure what whether you're asking in terms of safety record (I doubt it though because QANTAS has a better record than either) or comfort. For comfort I would say Singapore - excellent reputation, fantastic hygeine records in bathrooms and with food and an all round comfortable trip.
