This is actually a very common problem if chickens are not on the right diet. The shell around the egg that your chicken lays is made of mostly Calcium. Most of her bodies resources are put into making that shell. So, her body becomes depleted of its calcium resources and she begins to eat the shell of her own egg to correct that imbalance. To stop this from occuring you need to go to a farm supply store and buy a bag of ground up oyster shells. They can be found any where that you buy chicken feed. This should correct the problem.

Great answer from Old-Woman. and she is right.
Chickens need lost of nutrients to keep laying those eggs.
Oyster shell is great. You know we used to let our chickens out in the yard once a day, and they would find a worm and cackle about it, and all the hens would run to see what the one chicken had found. We had one that would come to the screen door in the summer and beg and beg and my grandfather would let her in and she would go to the drawer we kept the bread in and beg some more and my grandfather would take out a piece of bread , put it in a saucer and pour milk over it. She would eat it and then go to the bathroom and hop in a basket my mother kept there, and lay an egg. You know they stand up to lay eggs. Then cackle about it and go back outside.
They are much smarter than people give them credit for. Our eggs had yolks that stood up when you cracked them into the skiller and were a nice healthy color. You can't get eggs like that anymore. Are you sure you do not have a skunk getting into your hen house or a weasel?

Its not always a diet problem at all, rather, the chicken just accidentaly steps on an egg, breaks it...and discovers that the stuff tastes good. I use ping pong bals in each nest, the birds peck at them, and decide its not worth the trouble, and soon start leaving their eggs alone. If you have REALLY persistent egg-eaters, you can try the above along with "no pick bits" or pheasant spectacles. You can find them at a game bird supply or even on e-bay. Leave them on temporarily and in it inhibits forward vision, ( the direction they look when pecking eggs).

It's most likely not all the chickens eating their eggs, it's usually just one. You have to find out which one it is (start separating them and find out who the culprit is) and then decide what you want to do with that one. There's something wrong with a chicken that does that and you don't want them to eat the entire reason for having chickens! In my 15 years of having chickens I only had one that did that and we gave her away as soon as we found out which one it was!

My grandparents used to save egg shells, crush them into small grit, then bake them in the oven. They made sure that the grit was available to the hens at all times. If you just give them unbaked shells it will encourage them to eat their own eggs. They said that if a hen learns to eat her eggs she is no good as an egg layer anymore. My husband says that you can buy shell grit at a farm stockfeed supply store and that if your hens get a supply of shellgrit in a flat open dish available to the hens, they will stop eating the eggs. Best of luck.

Do you give you chickens "grit" This is small stone and oyster shell like substance. It is necessary in their diet to harden the egg shell. If it is not in their diet, then that is why. They are getting it from their own shells. (If they are getting this in their diet and you kill one and cut him open--his gizzard will contain this material. That information was free. lol )
Also you might ask at the grain elevator or where ever you buy your feed. It seems that there is something lacking their diet. It is hard to break this habit.
Good luck

I believe this si from them not having enough protein and getting a lack of nutrients from laying the eggs- so to regain these nutrients they eat their eggs.

My grandfather used to put the chicken in a sealed wooden box with holes in it and douse it with water several times a day for a day or two.

It never ate eggs again.
