There is no cure for the common cold so you just have to ride it out. You can try some over the counter meds to lessen the duration or temporarily relieve some of your symptoms. I am finally feeling about 95% better after two and half weeks with a cold. I was really sick with it over the holidays. Several people had told me that this particular cold lasts for three weeks (they were right)!

Several years back, the New England Journal of Medicine published research that proved zinc supplementation cut the duration of the common cold in half. That is a similar treatment effect for viruses that an antibiotic gives for bacterial infections (antibiotics don't work on viruses, only on bacteria and a few other causes of disease). Since then, the research has been repeated numerous times and published. The treatment effect is well established.
They make these cold lozenges that have a large amount of zinc in them that are perfect for this (and work very well I might add). I forget the brand but you can tell they are the real ones by the fact that they are dirty gray and gritty (because they have elemental zinc in them). They taste alright but not like candy like regular throat lozenges do.
One word of caution. Make sure it doesn't say "homeopathic" on the box. There are several brands of zinc lozenges that are, quite frankly, fraudulent. You can tell these because they look like candy, just like a normal throat lozenge. That's because there is actually no zinc in them. Homeopathic medications are made by putting an ingredient in a sealed bottle, then placing that bottle in a metal vat filled with water. The side of the vat is hit with bat or something to make the water inside vibrate. Supposedly, this causes the water to absorb the "energy" of what is inside the sealed bottle. The water is then mixed with sugar and then evaporated. The sugar is then formed into pills (or mixed into the lozenges). THERE IS NOT ACTUAL INGREDIENT IN THIS.
Needless to say, that doesn't do anything. And zinc isn't used in homeopathic treatments for colds anyway. The whole thing is a big fraud to sell cheap lozenges for a premium price while doing nothing. Don't fall for that crap.
Instead, get the real lozenges with actual zinc in them. These are a proven treatment with medical research published in respected medical journals to back up their efficacy.

Welcome to the club, I have had a cold/head cold/chest cold for about 6 days now. Normally a cold of this type last me approx. 9 days, Just a few things that have helped:
1) A cold compress over your sinus area.
2) Taking vitamins ever day
3) Drinking plenty of fluids (mainly water, or light colored soft drinks)
4) I swear by "airborne formula"
5) Plenty of rest
6) The classic saying: "Feed a cold, Starve a fever"
7) Reduce or limit your sexual activity. Save your strength.

What are you taking for your cold? What are your symptoms? Are you drinking alot of liquids? Have you tried the new liquid form of tylenol? Drink hot tea, eat chicken noodle or tomato soup. Keep yourself warm, rub vick's vapor over your chest and back, and if you have a runny nose, put some on and under your nose.

Do you have a temperature? Some colds just have to wear themselves away. If you feel really bad and a lot of time has passed or you have a fever, maybe you need to see a doctor. Sleep is good too. Take care of yourself.

drink lots of fluids. I find hot lemonade is great when I have a cold. It warms you up and it makes your throat feel better.
Gargle with hot saltwater and rinse your sinuses with warm salt water. Not much fun, but it helps clean things out and I think it helps make the cold pass faster.
and get plenty of sleep. that helps more than anything else!

your body needs rest above all else, so, sleep.
over the counter medications could help ease symptoms but viruses have to run their course, if you are generally healthy, you will feel better in a week or so, if not, go to your doctor.
