The Douay-Rheims New Testament was already published in 1582... so my question is why do people say the KJV is the oldest english version of the bible.

The truth is, very few people world-wide, even spoke english in the late 1500's.

The Catholic Church translated the Bible into the language of the people (which was Latin, at the time) way back in the 4th century.

It became the world's first commercially printed, and most widely distributed work when Gutenberg produced it, back in 1450-1455.

So much for the Protestant myth of the Catholic Church trying to keep the Bible secret!

Because they do not know the reality. I believe there is even a slightly earlier translation of the English Bible then Douay-Rheims. The KJV has stood the test of time, and that is why they knwo about it the best.

I don't think I have heard people say the KJV is the oldest version but many say it is the most accurate. Tyndale penned his in 1525, Geneva in 1560, etc... The D-R is also a Catholic bible so it is different to the KJV.
