I am arriving very early in the morning at the airport in New York City, and my bus does not leave until later that evening.

I want to spend the day looking around New York, but I don't want to have to carry my two suitcases with me the whole time.
Is there ANYWHERE in New York (Manhattan) that I can store my bags during the day? A "coat check" type place that would take suitcases? I don't think they do this at the train station or bus station anymore because of "security concerns"

i dont want to store them at the airport. that would be a MAJOR hassle, as my bus leaves out of manhattan, and its so expensive and takes so long to get out to JFK

Oh gee, that was going to be my answer. I do remember lockers in the airports and bus stations, but that was before 9-11.
