A Knockout is when a fighter goes down and the referee counts him out. (By counting to 10) If a ref stops the fight for any other reason, for example someone is just getting pounded and the ref stops it that's a TKO. You don't see many KO's anymore these days. Most non-decision's are TKO's.

KO-Knock out- when someone is getting beat, takes a fall and cant get up with his gloves in a fighting position by the count of ten.
TKO-Technical Knock Out- when the fighter is unable to contiue for many reasons, whether it is that he cant defend himself any more, there is a standing 8 count, a cut so severe over his eye or any location that cause a severe outcome from the match. anything that is a stoppage of the fight for a technical reason other than a knock down
getting knocked down 3 times in a round can also be considered a TKO even if the fighter is able to get back up

OK, A Knockout is when a fighter sustains a punch that causes him to fall to the canvas. If he cannot stand to his feet before the referee counts to 10, it is called a knockout. A TKO is when a fighter has absorbed so much punishment that the referee determines that if he takes anymore punishment, that he could be severly hurt; he could also stop the fight if he thinks that the fighter may be hurt badly due to him being overmatched.

Regular knockout is when they take a hit so badly that they are knocked down and don't come up.
A technical knockout is when the fighter gets knocked down repeatedly and eventually the ref decides to end the fight.

The first answer was totally right. A KO is just that, you knocked the other guy flat on his butt to the point that he is unable to get back up (blacked out or in boxing by a count). A TKO is when the guy can no longer defend himself and the ref calls the fight. At least this is the way I understand it. I am more into MMA than boxing. After you see a guy take a flying knee to the chin boxing is just boring.

I didn't bother to read all of the answers, but I did notice that some of the answers were leaving some of the details out. The referee does not have to reach the count of ten for there to be a KO. If the fighter is down and the ref thinks he's hurt enough to not have a chance to beat the count, he can stop the fight before reaching 10 and that's a KO.

A TECHNICAL KNOCKOUT OCCURS WHEN A FIGHT IS STOPPED DUE TO EITHER A REFEREE'S DECISION THAT IT IS IN A FIGHTERS BEST INTEREST NOT TO CONTINUE OR A DOCTOR AT RINGSIDE STOPS A FIGHT FOR THE SAME REASON - A FIGHTERS CORNER CAN CAUSE A TECHNICAL KO BY THROWING IN THE TOWEL ALSO.
A KNOCKOUT ONLY OCCURS WHEN A FIGHTER IS COUNTED OUT BY THE REFEREE ( AFTER A FIGHTER IS KNOCKED DOWN BY A PUNCH THE REFEREE COUNTS TO TEN - IF THE FIGHTER DOES NOT GET BACK ON HIS FEET AND IS NOT CAPABLE OR READY TO FIGHT ON - THIS IS A KNOCKOUT)

A TKO( Technical Knock Out) is when the Ref stops the fight cuz the fighter can't intellegently defend him self. A KO( Knock Out) is pretty self explanitory. The man falls like a sack of potatoes and is motionless.
