Yes. The dog would be part of the whole community. The monastery that I hang out at has a lot of cats. I hate cats. A dog would be much better.

yes, the majority can - depends on the location of the convent and if the sisters are there to be able to care for it properly.

Many monasteries have some sort of pet. For instance, I know the Carmelites in Salt Lake have a couple of dogs.
