Mini Pinschers... they look so cute acting all tough just like the big dobermans and are very protective. I got one for my boy when he was 2. Maximus was the runt of the litter and so loyal. He and my son were inseparable.

All dogs big or small have their own draw backs, some need lots of exercise, others require lots of grooming if long haired. If you don't have a specific dog in mind have a look at various dog breed books. Most will show a range of dogs & show what their requirements are, in respect to space, exercise grooming diet etc. It is also sometimes the case that bigger dogs are better with young children than your average small dog, but again it all depends on the breed & the upbringing of the dog. We have 4 kids & have 2 rhodesian ridgebacks. Although they are big dogs , they are very protective towards the family & are very gentle with the little kids, ie they don't mind the odd pulled tail, stood on or even dressed up in hats scarves etc. My parents have a patterdale terrier which is very good with the kids & doesn't need much time to look after but she can be a bit exciteable at times. My best advice is research it well, & choose a dog that will best fit in with your family life

shih tzu are small dogs, non shedding, can be taught not to bark if they even do to start with, they are small sturdy dogs, and good with kids. As for the wanting constant attention that just depends on the dogs personality. Every dog is differant. American eskimos are also a good dog. They are not small but they are far from big. A good idea is to adopt a young adult from a rescue or someplace. This way someone from the shelter or foster home can tell you want the dogs personality is like. If it is an older dog and out of the puppy stage it will be less "give me attention" then babies. a good place to look is www.petfinder.com for small dogs in general or www.eskirescuers.org for eskimos.

the "dog" that you are describing doesn't exist. all dogs (especially small ones) need a lot of attention and bark a lot. most small dogs are pretty timid, so they don't do well with children. however, some small dogs are more calm than others, like pugs for example. i have a friend that has two pugs and they are like couch potatoes...

I think the dog you're looking for is called NintenDogs.
Seriously, you are asking WAY too much of a dog. Get your kids a hamster. That's a good starter pet.

I would research a shitzu or lhasa apso. Maybe even a Yorkshire terrier. I have read that if they are brought up with children, and the children have respect for them, they make awesome pets. You can train any of them to not be yappy. Good luck!

West Highland White Terriers are supposed to be calm (for a terrier) and good with children.
