My friend is arging with me that it's legal, but i think that it's illegal because it's free and in the US, music and videos should be payed for in order to be legal, sort of like iTunes, Napster, and Rhapsody. Is Azureus legal or illegal?

Azureus (a Bittorrent client) is legal. If you use it to do illegal things like swap warez, it's illegal.

File sharing programs are just tools. It's legal to own a hunting knife, but it's not legal to use it to rob a bank.

And, yes, downloading copyrighted things without paying for them without the copyright holder's permission is illegal.

Why would your friend think that every other way of pirating music/movies, like the old Napster, Kazaa, eDonkey, Ares, Morpheus, etc. were illegal, but this one is legal. If you are getting copyrighted stuff for free, it is illegal.

The program itself is legal and can be used for legal purposes. But for the most part. The download it is typically used for (Music, pirated programs, the worst kinds of porn) are very illegal.

It's just like a hammer. It's all in how you use it (legal for hitting nails, not people.)
