I just bought some frozen soft shell crabs at the local market.
They did not have their legs on them. I could not see any eyes.
I assumed they were cleaned, or dressed. So I go home and I deep fry them, and when I tried them, there was a lot of gritty stuff coming into my mouth. I am not sure if it was sand or if it was just the contents of the crab. What do you think? Will I be ill?

It may be some pieces of the shell or it maybe a little sand. Sometimes when you get whole clams you will get that same gritty feeling in your teeth. All that is, is some left over sand that was not all the way cleaned out. So that maybe what you are feeling. And you will be fine. There is nothing to worry about with a little sand or a little piece of shell. Frying them may have just brought out the grit that was not properly cleaned out of them. Sometimes the grit will stick to the inner shell and when it is loose it will come out.

I live in Maryland and have soft crabs alot. You won't be ill.
Yes they were dressed (the eyes get clipped off). But they should have their legs. They may have had a little sand or the shell could have started to harden slightly.
