No Walmarts.
At that time and era..they were very expensive. They gave the best to the New Born King.

Gold and Frankincense were very fancy-pants for the time. Remember that the wisemen were from "the East" which is modern day Iran. The sort of gifts they brought would have been considered fit, quite literally, for a king. The myrrh I don't know about. It was actually much more common.

The Magi traveled in large caravans and gave gifts to any King they had audience with.... what the gifts were is not nearly as important as the statement they made... that he was being honored as a King.... they gave gifts to every King... in this paticular case... it may have been that this paticular carvan carried an abundance of these items for this specific purpose to provide to Kings.... these were all expensive items.... and often all 3 were used in the burial of people of wealth.... the frankincese and myrrh were fragrance spices..... and the gold to pay for the tomb.... this may or may not have been the reason they were provided.... as the fragrances were also used for perfumes.... and the gold to finance the family.
God bless hope this helps.

It was the favorite folk-legend of the time. Seriously.
There were many old stories in middle-eastern religions (now considered myths, of course) of god-sired savior/heroes being born to virgins, under new stars, and visited by magi bearing gifts.
