My dad had a VW variant in orange.

It looked like an overgrown Beetle and I hated it because it had plastic seats which used to weld to my legs in hot weather!!!

It amazed all my friends at it had a boot (trunk) at the rear and one at the front, leaving them asking 'where is the engine?'

The engine was underneath the car.

Here is a pic:

back in the says and maybe now still, people used to change the front-end of the VW BUG. they used to use the roll-royce front-end or anything that could fit nicely on the front. do a search for it and you'll see what i'm talking about. and as far as for "it went very fast" well, when you have about 130hp on a car that's only 1,300 lb, well.......fast wouldn't be an issue !!!!!!!

It sounds like the Karmann Ghia to me. (Did kind of look like an upturned boat, now I come to think of it!)
