It is not normal to hold your breath until you need air... Try not to think about breathing and your body should regulate your breathing. If you are constantly thinking about your breathing, you are not allowing your body to breathe automatically. If that doesn't help you should see a doctor. You might have a respiratory problem.

Are you paying enough attention to your EXhalation?
My clue is your statement that you 'hold' your breath.
Often, anxiety can cause someone to hold their breath and not exhale deeply enough.
Concentrate on your exhalation - the inhalation follows naturally.
When you exhale, do it from the top down: first exhale your lungs (that comes naturally). Then tighten your stomach muscles, then your lower abdominal muscles until you think that all the air is expelled.
Now give it yet another 'push'. You'll find that more air comes out.
Then let your body inhale naturally.
Oxygen starvation may make you feel like you need more air, because you haven't exhaled the 'stale' air from your body first.

try NOT to focus on your breathing. As in, [am i breathing too much, too little] etc.... if this doesnt work go to the doctor. Espescially if you are feeling dizzy, and it is possible you are getting asthma. It is usually something you are born with but In some cases people develop it from stress, nervosness, etc.

That happened to me a couple of times recently too. It only lasted a couple of days, and I wasn't constantly thinking about it, just whenever I wasn't occupied by something else. Eventually you just forget and everything goes back to normal.
If it happens a lot or continues to happen, I would see a doctor though, just in case.
It might just be a mild allergic reaction, you never know.

Do you have respiratory problems, are you morbidly obese? Do you smoke? If no to these answers it is most likely anxiety, or panic attack. It could be that you simply have asthma or a respiratory disorder, but if you have a clean bill of health I would say that it's stress related, anxiety, etc....

Make more of an effort to breathe deeply.

You probably need to start exhaling more. Inhaling is only half of breathing. you need to expel all the carbon dioxide from your lungs.
