"At the sound of the first droning of the shells we rush back, in one part of our being, a thousand years. By the animal instinct that is awakened in us we are led and protected. It is not conscious; it is far quicker, much more sure, less fallible, than consciousness...It is this other, this second sight in us, that has thrown us to the ground and saved us, without our knowing how...We march up, moody or good-tempered soldiers--we reach the zone where the front begins and become on the instant human animals."

P.S. Thanks to whoever answers this question.

Instinct takes hold of the soldiers when they are thrown into war. Rather than rational thought or taught behavior, they rely on their evolutionary instinct that has been developed from the time when humans lived more the way we now think of as animal-like.

I find it to be a profound statement on the nature of war and what it does to people. Where does it come from?

Those of us who have been there know---
This is something that IS in war---
The primal instincts come out without any effort
and Do take one over---It is a very surreal thing at times--
senses so acute that years later you can literally remember the serial number on a set of dogtags that you only briefly saw of someone that you didn't even know !! And, a hundred thousand other things that you simply can't explain !!
I've seen mild mannered green grunts turn into vampires within a thirty minute firefight---it's primal---it's surreal-- and evidently universal !!!

the author is mentioning about the war .soldiers do not bother about conscious.they just fight to kill another human being because he is ordered to do so but deep down in their conscious there still is a human being but for the glory of his own person or for his country or for his motives he suddenly becomes animal whose survival is dependant on killing other animals.
the author is trying to prove that war is no good no matter what the circumstances may be.love and peace will kill our animal instinct.

I think he means that every human being has two sides of himself the first one is the one that appears in front of the others and the second one is the hidden part which he said that it is the animal side. He thinks that this animal side is better and this is the real us and we should discover it, and he thinks that there are very simple things can help us descover it like the sound of the shell.
I guess.
