I have a 3 year old with petit mal's, but all she does is stare blankly for several seconds and it's over. Since I'm with her 24-7, she's never been harmed by them. But, one week before Christmas, my son was at his best friends, and the friends older sister (16) who had not had a seizure in 5 years, had a grand mal in the bathtub and drowned. What type of epilepsy does your son have?

My son had seizures... but not from epilepsy. It can be very scary but we have some really funny family stories that have come from it. Being able to laugh and talk openly with the whole family made it less scary for all of us and helped my son understand that it was just something different about him - not something bad or embarassing.

Our kids especially like the stories where mom and dad did something dumb - like freak out.

One of our favorite stories.... is from before the doctors diagnosed it, but we were suspecting that something wasnt right. We had a collie...who was an older dog who didnt really like being a house dog (he was a show dog before we got him and lived in a kennel).... so he hated being at home alone.... which of course got lots better once we had a baby and I was staying home from work. The dog appointed himself the doggie sitter and would go from room to room whereever the baby was. He also staked out the doorway whenever my son was asleep in the crib.

WELL - the dog started the habit of pacing back and forth at naptime. From the babysroom to the livingroom and back again. So dumb mom gets tired of this and puts the dog outside, thinking it probably needed to use the bathroom. Dog (who never hardly barked or anything) would refuse to go off the porch and stand looking in the window so Ild let him back in.

This went on for weeks and weeks... and dumb mom could only complain about how the dog was driving her NUTS.... sp started making the dog stay outside for the ENTIRE NAPTIME.... so guess what the dog does?

One afternoon he jumped through the screen in the window and planted himself next to the crib and refused to go out of the house for three days... dog didnt eat, didnt pee, didnt poop anything for three days. We tired to pull him, push him, pick him up, nothing worked. The dog was not budging!

Shortly after that we found out about the seizures... of course mom had to apologize profusly to the dog - who then became kind of an automatic early warning system. If the dog ever started acting wierd especially at naptime (our seizures occured mostly when asleep) then we all knew to go check on my son.

I'm sure at 9 yrs you have been dealing with this for awhile. The best thing I can think to tell you is make epliepsy a part of your sons life - not the defining characteristic of it. Make it a part of your family - not the main thing that goes on in your family. Easier said than done, I know - but the whole family will be mentally healthier for it. Best wishes to all of you.
