I want actual testimonials from actual owners...not just what you've heard. i'm looking at buying a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. It's a 4x4, with the 5.9 liter, it's an extended cab shortbed automatic. What kind of fuel mileage can i expect from this vehicle?

Depends on the engine size. I sometimes drive a 2500 and it only gets 10. The smaller V8's will get better mileage but dont expect over 18 mpg.

I had 2 1998's with the same motor, was doing good to get about 10 to 12 around town and about 15 to 16 freeway. mine were 2 wheel drive though, so you might expect close to that.

I also had a 2001 with the same motor, started out getting about 12 around town. Don't know what happened but it had dropped to about 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 MPG around town. Even after $750 at the dealer they still couldn't find the problem. I was glad to get rid of that one.

Over all I have always had the 5.9 in all my trucks and except for the '01 all were great, but i guess that is life.

I now have a 1999 Ram 2500 Diesel 4X4, around 18 MPG freeway and 10 to 12 around town.
2002 Ram 4.7 2 wheel drive. about 12 MPG around town and 18 to 20 freeway.
Oh all my trucks have had automatics. Only because my wife can't drive a stick and I have hip and knee problems.

Still wouldn't have anything but a Dodge.

My Dakota R/T gets 10-11 mpg city and about 16-17 on the highway. My Dakota R/T has the 5.9 in it. Stop and go traffic with the 5.9 is killer on mileage, its such a gas hog. If you don't do alot of stop and go, you could expect around 13-14 mpg.
