Broken neck/asphyxia

2007-01-07 08:27:40 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

the hang-mans Knot is designed to dislocate the neck and sever the spinal cord. This happens by the weight of the body falling down causing the knot to act like a lever against the back of the neck.

If the drop to tighten the rope is not sufficient to break the neck, then one would die by strangulation/suffocation. If it is sufficient, then one would die because when the neck breaks, it damages the communication highway between the vital organs and the brain, and the body ceases to function, causing organ failure; the heart stops and the lungs fail.

Either way is a pretty horrible way to go!!!

If it is a drop hanging (such as Saddam Hussein's) it is the breaking of the neck and thus the injury sustained to the spinal chord.
However if there is no drop then it is asphyxia, the restriction of the airway.
This is why people were once hung, drawn and quartered.
They would be taken down just before they would have died of oxygen deprivation to endure further torture.

I imagine the following happens. The rope tightens round your neck and probably breaks your neck. However, what actually kills you is the cutting off of the blood supply to your brain. This can make you unconscious within seconds but will kill you over a slightly loger period. Probably up to a minute.
I always though that when someone was strangled they died because they were unable to breath, but now I know its because of lack of blood to the brain. Don't worry, i'm not a serial strangler, i just work in the medical profession.

Until Saddams death I always thought that the knot went to the back of the neck but apparently death is more instantaneous when the knot is placed at the side.

The moments leading up to the death must be terrifying for the person being hanged.

First the neck is broken from the initial fall which can result in instant death but sometimes the person will die from asphyxia (suffocating)

If you are 'lucky', the drop from the gallows will break your neck and you die instantly, the other main two ways are your neck breaks and you dont die, instead your body becomes paralysed and you asphyxiate or you just asphyxiate. Some say it is down to the hangman himself and his skills as to how well or badly it goes.

A proper hanging results in a broken neck and severed spinal cord which will stop your heart. not just choking off the breath

If you dont brake your neck when u fall, then u will die slow. You slowley choke your self, your eyes will pop out and u will piss and s**t yourself. This is not a nice way to die, thats why they put a mask over your head.
