My 2 dogs get an exam & all of the required shots every year. My vet is now recommending Bordetello shots twice a year. Is it necessary? They do not interact with other dogs. My dogs have been kennelled once in 5 years. I think it's just a way for the Vet to get more $$ out of us.

I've also had a dog get dreadfully sick with auto immune caused by his annual shots. Since then, none of my dogs get shots every year, let alone twice a year and never will again. There have been protocols done saying dogs need shots only every 3 years. You can have titers done on your dogs but they're not accurate for everything. If these were my dogs, I would definitely not get bordetello shots twice a year.

Bordatella vaccinations are not a core vacciantion so unless you are boarding or around a lot of dogs like at a dog park or show then they are an unnecassary vaccination. I show, do demos, take my dogs ot work at the vet hospital, etc and none of my dogs has ever received a bordatella vaccination nor will they ever. It is actaully a pretty worthless vacciantion..it doesn't prevent kennel cough it only helps lessen the duration and it only helps with 2-3 of the strains and doesn't do a thing for the entire 28-32 strains. Also Bordatella (kennel cough) is a self limiting illness..it is more of an annoyance then anything else.

As for all vaccinations they do NOT have to be done yearly nor should they be. All vets have the new protocol on vaccinations that is now in place with the AVMA/AAHA and all 27 vet schools.
distemper/parvo is now given every 3 years after the initial puppy series and booster.

The only necassary vaccinations (core vaccinations) are:
Distemper, parvo, canine hepatitis (adenovirus-2) and rabies,
The protocol for those are :
8-9 weeks distemper/parvo

12-14 weeks distemper/Parvo
16-18 weeks distemper/parvo
20 weeks or older rabies
Then one year from the date of the last vaccination a booster..after that only every 3 years (Rabies may need to be done differently based on laws in your state even though it is not recommended to give it more often )

Lepto, Lyme & Bordatella are noncore vacciantions and are done only on a case by case basis depending on exposure.

Giardia, coronavirus, adenovirus-1 are not recommended nor are they needed.

If you want more info check out the AAHA site or Dr. Jean Dodds site. Also if possible check out the november 2006 issue of the Whole Dog Journal..it has an excellant article on vacciantions.

Nope. Not necessary. That's what I learned from my dog's vet. The only reason they have to get those is if you plan on having them stay in a kennel for any amount of time, ever. The Bordetello shot is for Bordetello Pertussis...Kennel cough. A dog will develop this because of the anxiety and excessive barking due to being away from the owner and in the kennel.

Vaccinations are tricky. Depending where you live...some are vital, some are required by law, and others....

I have titers done annually with bloodwork with my adult dogs. If the titers are fine...I don't vaccinate.

The doggie daycare/obedience trainers I like require biannual bordatella shots. So I get those done.

I get the bordatella done on my dogs because I'm occasionally taking in rescue dogs. I take my dogs everywhere, and they don't have to meet the other dog to catch it. If you don't take your dogs out, never have to kennel them....I might not get it done.

It's up to you.

I don't give kennel cough vaccine to my dogs unless I am taking them to a show. Your vet is right as this vaccine needs to be given every 6 months to remain working, but I don't see any need to do this unless you are planning on boarding them or showing them.

Ant time your dog is around other dogs, they should have Bordetello or kennel cough shots. just remember that when you take your dog to the vet there is bound to be other dogs there.

No- he is over vaccinating your pets. Find a different vet. You don't not want to go through what I did as a consequence of over vaccination. I lost my babe to IMHA.
