The morning after everyone is being cool and you're not, you'll find out who's really cool. Why does everyone think being sober while everyone else is drunk isn't fun? You pay to go to the zoo and watch the monkey's right? It's pretty much the same thing only it's free. I'm a bartender and I love watching guys think they've got a shot with that beautiful girl who's sipping one Martini all night. Or the group of guys who spend hundreds of dollars buying a group of girls drinks getting no where. I love hearing the stories that are complete BS but they think is really cool. There's nothing wrong with being sober. If you're friends don't agree, find yourself some new friends with a little more class.

Fortunately, there are a lot of ways to say no to alcohol and not look like a loser. It is also what you do, in this case, avoiding alcohol, that makes you not look like a loser. Many things you can say and do have already been stated here. Some other things you can say and do and realize are:
1. Be above the influence. There's a whole movement of people today that use this as their slogan. Find out about it.
2. Find people your age involved in Al-Anon, or ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics). These are people who are not alcoholic but have close friends or family members who are alcoholic. These people know how uncool drinking can be and how dangerous and detrimentral it is because they live with alcoholics.
They also probably live their own lives free of alcohol and can probably give you a better idea of what being cool really means.
3. If this issue becomes a topic of conversation, you can say a lot of things that work for you depending on the place and time you're in: "I'm the designated driver, I just don't want to now, Did you know a lot of people think it's uncool to drink, I don't feel like being tanked right now, drunks are blubbering idiots and I'm just not into that, the doctor told me I have liver damage and if I continue to drink, I could get really sick, etc.. I'm sure there must be a book out there consisting of things you can say to people who try to get you to drink and insist on you drinking. If not, start writing one!!!
4. If you're out somewhere and you feel out of place, you can order beers like O'douls or Kingsbury that have no alcohol in them (hence the name near beer). There's a lot of beverages like that. Or just drink a coke or rootbeer or something, ya know?
5. When you realize how much damage alcohol has done our towns, cities, states, our whole nation, you realize how uncool alcohol is. The people that think it is cool really don't know what they are talking about (although it's probably not wise to tell these people that they are stupid, you never know, they might work for Budweiser or something, and they are not going to appreciate your not drinking). Unfortunately, most of them really have to find out for themselves when they find out that alcohol has ruined they're lives and the lives of those around them. It's amazing how many people get really sick from drinking, their internal organs damaged and they make no connection with the fact that their sickness was caused and/or complicated by alcohol.
So, these are just a few of the things you can say, do, use, etc.. to avoid alcohol and maintain your sanity and sense of humor. Eventually, you'll find you have a whole cool lifestyle with cool friends who have no need of alcohol. Good luck. In our alcohol ravaged society, your going to need all the luck you can get.

a simple "no thank you" would be sufficient. My brother does not drink at all. Yet, I work in the wine industry. He doesn't drink for personal reasons dating way back to childhood. And I really could care less if he drank or not.
However, if you feel a response is needed when somebody asks why I would either say that I am designated driver, or tell white lie and say I am having rum and coke, when probably am only having diet coke.
Be strong and do not worry about it.

No need to mention the concussion. Just say "No, I'm good." You can carry a bottle of sparkling water or soda pop to the party with you and sip at it. As long as you have your drink in your hand, you don't look like you need a "refill."

Most people on this site have the right idea - YOU are the cool one. However, you could hold a glass of apple cider and sip it and no one would know that it is not a sweet wine? Or a tall glass of tonic water could be another drink. No one needs to fault you for being tee total.
Well done.

Personally, I think alcohol just makes people look stupid. I mean, my experience with alcohol has scared me away from it. I've never drinken alcohol and never will. However, maybe say you're not thirsty, your doctor gave you some medication that can't be mixed with alcohol in your system, or, as for me, my family seems to have an addictive personality. So, if I never drink, I can't become addicted. Good luck, and good job staying alcohol-free.

Why do you need an excuse. Just say "No, I'm good, thanks" and leave it at that. You wouldn't explain why you ordered the chicken instead of the beef or why you straightened your hair instead of wearing it curly, would you? Don't make apologies for your preferences and you'll never look like a loser.
Just be yourself and be confident...that's what makes people seem cool to others...Think about that and you'll realize I'm right.

I could care less who drinks and who doesnt and pretty much everyone I know thinks the same way. It is stragne that you are asking a question like that. No one would think you are a loser for not drinking. Dont worry about it, if its not for you, then thats fine...

If your friends think that not drinking makes anyone a loser you really need a better set of friends.
I drink bottled sparkling water at parties and no one says a word about it. Simply don't drink, I doubt it will be noticed by anyone.
