Speaking in tongues are for the first century Christians to be able to preach in other languages. The bible is complete and has been translated to many languages so there's no need for tongues. So yes, it could be self-induced and not backed up by the holy spirit (u know what I mean). Nobody understands them anyway coz there's really no message.

Doesn't Paul tell us that it is a sign to them that believe not ? That to the people who did not believe, God rebuked them through people speaking an unknown tongue ?
Put simply and crudely, if Israel were disobedient, they would be invaded and oppressed by foreign speaking people.
You see that today amongst Jewish people who still will not hear God, that because they, as a people, have been disobedient, they were dispersed from their covenant land to all the nations of the world to sit among people of a strange tongue.
And possibly also, that because they (and us) will not hear, it is as though the word spoken is as an unknown tongue ?
1 Corinthians 14/21-22.
Today people act like children in thinking they can speak in tongues, according to Paul - 1 Corinthians 14/20.
Consequently other people think they are mad, and with good reason, 1 Corinthians 14/23.
We are exhorted to grow up in wisdom and understanding and the knowledge of God.
We ought to consider that the modern idea of tongues is but immature and associated with disobedience, and sadly, draws attention to self in a not very nice way and does the exact opposite of bringing an unbeliever to conviction that he falls down and worships God, I Corinthians 14/24-25.
God is well able to perform His miracles without our trying to help Him and ' work it up.' The Spirit's work is normally inward and unseen and known by the effects and fruit and certainly not within man's control or operation.
Even the great apostle Paul was unable to do anything for many days until God gave it to him to cast out the spirit of divination, Acts16/18.
Are we not utterly dependant upon God for everything ? And do we suppose we can operate supposed gifts, which require the Spirit's operation, at will ?
Herein lies much confusion and error and not a little deception.
Oh how desirable is lowliness and humility and how blessed are the poor in spirit.

I agree.
A consistent criticism levied against modern tongue-speaking is that it lacks the spontaneity of the tongue speaking of biblical times. Most followers have to be coached, coaxed, and forced into their utterances. Adherents of tongue-speaking present formulas and instructions to teach interested parties how to speak in tongues. To counter this, some admit that people are coached into the initial stages, but that the continuation of the experience is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Yet various Pentecostal ministers acknowledge that many of their members only pretend to receive the gift, and many who really do speak in tongues give no evidence of any genuine fruit of the Spirit in their lives. (It has also admitted that demon possession may be a cause for tongue-speaking.)
Still, many classical Pentecostal and Catholic charismatics deny that tongue-speaking is a learned behavior, as it would be tantamount to denying that it was a gift of the Holy Spirit.

Yeah. It kind of spooks me out. Pentacostals are good people but I don't think you can set a time for tongue-speaking. Some churches have, like, 1:00-2:00: time for tongue-speaking. You can't coerce the Holy Spirit like that.

To every original there is always a fake, one can truly speak in tongues, you can control it, it does not control you that is what the bible tells us and I have witnessed this in my life, however there are a lot of people faking it, suffice it to say that there are real tongues and there are fake tongues, I know mine is real because it has got me out of trouble many times and I feel ready to take on the world and after speaking in tongues.
Plus, people will talk down or low of speaking in tongues when they do not understand it and do not speak it, go figure!

'Speaking in tongues' is a gift from God, it is the language of the Angels, people do try to recreate it but you can always tell when someone is putting it on, because it sounds false. God gave us the gift of tongues to confound the devil. so no I do not agree that 'speaking in tongues' is usually self induced.

Who cares? Whether "speaking in tongues" in self-induced or spiritual doesn't have a whole lot to do with your destiny. Besides which of the myriad of "opinions" are you going to listen to?? The ones that seems to substantiate your stand of course. So why not go on with your own opinion without trying to raise hell?

Not sure about self-induced but I agree with where you are coming from. I think often it is the general atmosphere of others doing it and emotional euphoria which can lead people to do it.

Yes, I think that 90% of the time it is. I don't think that it is always a conscious thing, they don't know that they are making it up. Real glossolalia is for the benefit of the whole community and happens rarely only when nothing else is possible. Sometime it might happen to someone privately and in these cases it is not in spoken form.

Religious belief is a form of psychosis, "speaking in tongues", comes with the same diagnosis; a delusional mental condition.
